She blinked at his words, then shook her head. "Wrong answer," she told him. "My question extends beyond those whose loyalties lie with the former queen? You must learn their thoughts, their dreams, their ambitions. For when they are before you the loyal and the treacherous will both sound the same. They will all laugh when you make a jest, they will weep when you are sad. They will pledge undying love for you. Their words, therefore, will be meaningless. Unless you know the thoughts behind the words." There was a horrible glazed look in the girl's eyes, in the way she sat beside him and was silent. She squinted her eyes at the scrolls, " … you must learn to do this if you desire success." Her eyes opened wide again, and she looked upset. "You dislike me," she said.

Lyle remained silent, he had no reason to pretend to be anyone else. He was himself around her, he wouldn't hide. He smirked when she went on about success and loyalty, meaningless things to his bigger ambition, or so he considered. He waited until she was finished, having bent over while she was finishing. Then a muffled laugh started, it was slow and deep at first, then it rose. He threw his head back and continued laughing, something dark and yet funny was found in his tone. He stopped and closed his mouth, his head still back and his eyes opened once more. He was about to speak, but her question made him swallow his words. He corrected his head and stared at her with a blank expression. "Actually I think I love you." He spoke like a teenager now, his tone a bit confused, but confident in his confusion. He waited for a moment, then smiled, putting his hands on the table and leaning his head back a bit. "Shouldn't I? We're the same, you and I. They told me so." He spoke now as if she were stupid for not guessing this by now. "We're impossible together, by humans standard, and of course I desire someone else. However, they told me this is how I feel, so this is what I will believe." He closed his eyes, 'until they shut up at least...' He thought to himself.

She wanted to run but she couldn't, she couldn't. She tried and it didn't work, it never worked, every day the girl was like an open sore, a waking scream, and it didn't matter. No one saw her. She wanted to run, but knew there was nowhere she could go … She looked up at him, her red eyes rested on his face as his statement echoed in her mind. "You love me?" she repeated softly. The voices were watching, smiling easily, and she knew she must be careful. She must do what they wanted. In her mind there was a blade at her throat. Don't want to don't want to don't want to, they whispered. But no one else can have you. We don't want you broken. "For me love is pain," she said dully. He seemed so young, younger than she had ever been, even when she was born into the voices arms, and she traced his cheek, her finger running the length of his jaw. "You deserve far more. Love the one you desire. For there are forces in the world which use us, abuse us, discard us. I am possessed, Lyle."

Lyle frowned, his eyes followed her finger for only a moment, then he smiled and looked up. He closed his eyes, "That's the difference between you and I, child. I know what love is." He grinned a bit, revealing he had not completely meant romantically, although he highly hinted to such terms. He took her hand in his, "I am more powerful than the voices in your head, and far more powerful than you think. I am not a man, but an idea. I can take you from their hands." He narrowed his eyes and put his hand on her cheek now. "The children of the dessert are crying. They want you. They want you to be their mother. "

When she first became the living dead girl she used to turn to the voices at night, thinking if they thought she wanted their pain and hunger, it would be over sooner, that they would let her go earlier each night, that maybe they would give her grace. Grace was her favourite word. A state of being. Something you could pray for. Something the gods could grant. Something you could obtain. Perfection was out of reach. But grace -- grace you could reach. I can take you from their hands … Words trailed off, she watched him dream like a once upon a time little girl used to. Big dreams. Impossible dreams. He wouldn't be able to stop the voices. Nothing could. Nothing would. She shook her head, and words fell into it. "No. Don't lie to me." There was a look of despair in her eyes that was so haunting. She no longer believed in anything or anyone and had lost hope and faith in everything she had once believed in. It was brutal.

Lyle saw her eyes, then the voices he heard were strong. He heard a crying, a desperate plea for a leader. He threw his hands over his ears and gritted his teeth, bending over a bit. After a moment, and seemly out of desperation, he wrapped his arms around Ai and held her tightly against him, but not enough to hurt her. "I have no reason to lie to you."

She pushed away after she'd counted to ten twice. She didn't know what to say to him, to the naked worry in his voice. His weakness made her nervous. It made her want to hurt him, too. I have no reason to lie to you … The voices would say that as a low, throbbing whisper, louder than a roar, but Lyle made it a needy whine, like a fly's buzz. Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz. She listened to the flies during the day in the summer. They flew around, living on who knew what - air maybe? - and then, come fall, they're gone. She wished she could be a fly. Live on nothing. Have wings. She sat silently, her blood-red eyes holding to his gaze. Then she looked to his lips. She could twist her fingers into his mouth, knotting his lips before squeezing his jaw. Bending him back, forcing him down. He would do it, she thought. He would break. The girl leaned over, put her mouth on his. Bit his lip, felt the flesh, soft and tender, caught between her teeth. Harder. Deeper. She watched his eyes when she pulled away, the taste of his broken mouth in hers. They smiled. The voice's smile was wide and sunny, happy. Rotten, dead inside, underneath. When she smiled, she thought it looked like theirs.

(( Ooo, ouch... Don't hurt the desert's son. Unless that was in her thoughts? ))
Lyle suddenly changed masks, giving a blank stare as if he were never hurt by these voices he claimed to have. He grinned a bit, then a look of surprise came over him when she leaned forward, her mouth to his. She bit his lip, he closed his eyes, gritting his teeth as the pain reached him. Then a loud roar rendered all with ears unmovable. The screech was directed at the room, it was hard and uncaring. Lyle opened his blue eyes slowly, looking toward the window. The roar continued, far more powerful with each pause, breath, and new roar. Then there was no pause, different roars focused on the room, as if they wanted to make Ai deaf. Lyle seemed unaffected by their constant ear sours. After he felt the pain would be equal between them, he smiled faintly. "Enough, children." He whispered, then the roaring ceased,

((Nope I'm afraid it was all intentional. She's pretty screwed in the head))
She leaned in, staring at his eyes more closely. No hand raise, no words, no voice. He was just still. Silent. Just like how she sat with the voices. Just like she was when the voices reach for her. Now she knew why the voices do not care about food, why they eat the same meals over and over, why all the things that cramp her stomach and mind with want mean nothing to them. She was all filled up, head to toe crammed with having Lyle sitting there watching her. Those deep blue eyes - closed now - but what was behind them. Fear? Maybe? She smiled wider still to let him know that it was nothing to her; the kiss, the pain, all of it meant nothing. Though, the good feeling didn't last long. She gasped at the noise. The pressure was a sharp hot flare of pain, bright like light, and she started to sink to the floor, ready to crawl and beg, anything, but it went away. He made it go away. "I'm sorry," she said and tried not to think of the voices and how furious they were, how furious they would be, how they would be waiting, waiting.

Lyle turned and crossed his arms, unable to answer to her apology. "It's much too late Ai... You've mocked me." He turned around, then walked over to her. He bent down and reach out a hand for her, "Yet still part of me is also sorry. Perhaps one day you will understand." He offered, then sighed, looking out toward the dessert. "They are not in control like your voices. Not as in control as you think..." He touched his lip that was bleeding now, the taste of copper stinging his tastebuds. "Why would you do something so hurtful to me?" He asked, his voice clearly hurt.

"No, it can't be too late," she said, but her voice was a little girl cry, soft and weak. The voices had taught her only one way to speak. "I said I was sorry." She brought her knees up and rocked back and forth, soothing herself with nonsensical words repeated over and over. She looked up at Lyle and there was clouded worry in her eyes. He reached out to her. She shook her head faintly. The sullen fly buzz was back in his voice when he asked why she had hurt him. The question made her smile. People who had seen her smile like that always looked away. They saw she was all wrong, that her smile meant someone else's pain. But no one ever said anything. "I wanted to," she shrugged.

(( I just realized I never responded!! DX ))
Lyle watched her smile, but it didn't effect him much, he guessed it was how she was made. He withdrew his hand and put it up to his lip, feeling no pain as he had shut down his nervous system's signals for that area of his face. He doubted she would understand if he told her, but it was part of who he was, able to control his body perfectly. He put his hands on his hips, "Apologies are only good if you repent and never do so again... I'm a child of the desert now."
