Lyle didn't walk outside the royal building much anymore, he was more of a king now. He set on the floor with a table in front of him. He was signing some scrolls and papers, making sure everything was taken care of. The room was rather empty, a quick fix as long as Ai obeyed the letter he had sent to invite her. He hadn't had much chance to talk to anyone since he had taken The Capital.

Dressed in a dark blue kimono covered with a design of tiny carriage wheels in shades of brilliant yellow and red, the girl entered the palace and handed her summons to one of the receiving servants, who in turn, escorted her down several long halls through to Lyle. She walked as if she were in a trance. Inside the room she kept her gaze to the ground in front of her and then let her eyes rise until they met his face for an instant, before quickly looking away. After a few more steps she did the same thing again. When she was very close, she knelt down in front of him, and then looked him right in the eye. "I knew you were special," she said.

Lyle tensed when she entered, but relaxed himself best he could. He waited for her to speak, looking up at times to wonder about her quite behavior. After she spoke, he dropped his pen and looked up, surprised by her statement. "S-special? Whatever do you mean child?" He questioned, unsure of what she meant. Did she know? About the worms? About his plans? Or was she just being nice? No. She must know something she's not telling him, that's what he decided.

"You are in control of the throne." She said cheerfully. The girl stood and walked over to the window. She took a deep breath. The air felt good in her lungs, refreshing, invigorating. How strange, she thought, the fog in her head evaporating. She felt better than she had in a long while. She wanted to run down to the river and wade out into the crystal-clear waters, feeling the sun warm on her back. Turning to him, she asked, "Why did you invite me?"

Lyle closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. "Yes, I am. This is not too special, there have been many kings in our history." He reminded her. He continued with the duties laid before him while he waited for her to speak again. At her question, he didn't stop writing, nor did he take too long to respond. "Because your powers intrigue me, I suppose, and I wanted to know if they've returned to you since the crystal has been restored." He was partially lying, and he wasn't quite sure if he remembered what her powers were.

"This is true," she agreed. "But from the moment I saw you, I knew that you would overthrow the crown and gain control of the throne. I knew that you were special." The girl turned from the window and slowly paced the length of the room. Fingers lightly grazing the textured wall. "Yet now you must be cautious for you have destroyed the peace and have many enemies. There are still few who remain loyal to the crown." She stopped moving and turned to him, head cocked, eyes afar away, a half-smile on her lips. "I smell blood-lust," she said. "Beware!"

Lyle swallowed, putting his pen down and moving to rest on the weight of his arms. He leaned back and caught himself with his hands on the ground, then closed his eyes, he didn't much like where this was going or what she was implying. Lyle moved again, this time rising to his feet. He put his hands behind him and walked to one of the windows, his back to Ai. "You know how you go somewhere else sometimes? Well, I- I do too." He turned back around and leaned against the wall by the window. "See there once was a man who heard voices too. He didn't know any gods of the sea, and had a few friends, but he also has a secret. There are things in this world we will never understand." He put his hands together and rubbed them as if he were cold. "Ai?" He looked over to her. "I did something very wrong."
(( Ugh, stupid movie giving me a line >< ))

Never grow up. Like something out of a story, maybe. Try saying it while hot, heavy voices pinch, testing to make sure you're still child enough. Try saying it when you can't grow, when you're forever trapped where someone else wants you to be … "Yes," she whispered. The girl knew he was special, just how special she could not say. His confession was a revelation. Questions desperate for answers clawed in her mind. But she asked none. The voices wouldn't like it, so she remained silent. At that moment he was not a fearless leader. He was a man trapped, scared. The girl walked slowly up to him. "Tell me," she said.

Lyle shook his head, putting a hand on her head when she walked to him. "Non' Chiquitita, it's better if I don't." He sighed and gave in to a small smile. He wasn't really sure what she was to him, a friend? A sister? A child? A women? But whatever she was, there was something they had in common. They were both children of nature, and would never fit in if they showed their true personality. Ai didn't hide what she thought most of the time, but Lyle? He had matured to pretend, balancing the voices heard in the night with reality. "What are we, Ai? Are there others like us? Does our age make us different, or is there an age in what we are?"

The girl looked up at him. Her face was unreadable. "You think it is," she said, the words making neither a question nor a declarative sentence - they came out perfectly flat and inflectionless. Get up. Those were the first words she ever heard. Opened her eyes, saw a girl, black and blue all over, dried blood. "Get up and go bathe, Ai," the voices said, and Ai did. She did. That's how she was born. Naked, hairless, covered in blood like all babies. Named, bathed, and then taken out into the world. "What are we?" she echoed. Then she lifted her arms to be picked up, something she could not remember doing or desiring to do for a long time - maybe ten years. It was amazing how time got by, how quickly a child could change, change in front of your eyes with an unobtrusiveness that was nearly terrible.

Lyle took her silence to mean she was thinking, he often found her lost to this world (Or at least he always thought of it this way). He walked back over to the scrolls and set down, hearing her repeat the question instead of answer it. "Are we old or young? Are we alien, or perhaps the real natives?" He pondered on more thoughts outloud.

She was in front of him her arms extended, a shy girl who had never really tasted friendship. Suspicious yet craving she was, of the slightest touch or embrace - a soul crying alone in a cosmic wilderness. And here stood a man the same as her, for he professed to hearing the voices also. But when he sidestepped her returning to his work she knew that they were not the same, only similar. She blinked at the empty space before her surprisingly disappointed, her hands returned to her sides and she looked over her shoulder at him when he spoke. "I am fourteen," she answered. "My name is Ai and I will die soon."

Lyle remained silent, he couldn't embrace her, not now. He would begin to think wrongly of her, he would think they were equals when he knew deep inside they were different. He watched and listened, it was all he knew how to do when people spoke. "Well I'm ageless and my name is Deviance." He put firmly, perhaps a play on words. Cultural norms no longer effected his behavior, they were simply props in a play. Life was a play. He was a brilliant actor, and perhaps Ai was too? Or maybe she helped backstage?

She did not reply to his comment, but cocked her head and narrowed her eyes, studying him for evidence that he was mocking her. After a minute or so, she leaned low over the window sill and looked down watching the people in the city slide by slowly. Crowds were moving along the avenue, and scores of carriages flowed by, filled, for the most part, with expensively dressed nobbles. "Everyone you see," said the girl softly, "requires something from the king. Yet each gift to one will be seen as an insult to another. Among them will be those who are loyal to the king and those who will be traitors. Some are loyal now, but will turn traitors. Some could become traitors, but a gift from the king will keep them loyal." She paused her thought and looked back at him. "How does the king know who to trust and who to kill, who to reward and who to punish?"

Lyle narrowed his eyes when she turned to the window, his expression pained. He hated her in some ways, how she mocked that they were different. He hated that she looked so young, as if mocking him, laughing at him for being in a maturer creature's body. He looked away, she could not help him, he knew that. At once he could flirt with her, as a young cub would pretend for an older lioness to become his mother. But Ai was not his mother, she was not wiser them him anymore, not in his eyes. He sighed, then looked up at her words.
His arms crossed over his chest, "I need none of the subjects of my mother's kingdom. All will parish if and when the voices have their way. All will be scattered, like sheep when their shepherd is eaten. One moment I will be here, then they will gobble me up and all will understand."
