Phoebus waited in the hall for Lyle, the leader of the city, who had summoned Phoebus to see him. He sighed, pacing back and forth impatiently. To put things lightly, Phoebus had a certain resentment towards Lyle. Lyle never did anything to him specifically, but rather Chainey and Temperance. Temperance had vanished, which Phoebus found unfortunate since he thought she was a fine leader, and Chainey had lost her position as captain based on one accusation from Lyle. Lyle never even explained why or what the evidence was, which Phoebus found to be careless. That was not how the law worked. It was because of that carelessness that someone who he happened to care about was pelted with rocks by an ignorant peasant man who Phoebus still wanted to find and hit repeatedly. Stopping his pacing, he sighed, and forced himself into his military persona. His expression and body language completely drained of emotion and personality, and he stood rigidly straight with his arms firm behind his back. The sooner this summoning was over, the better.

Ther guards that patrolled the halls were oddly dressed. their masks resembled dragon heads and their mouths were covered. They carried spears most of the time, and not a single one seemed to acknowledge Phoebus as a human being, rather a statue that they Passed through on their patrol. Lyle opened his door after a moment, looking over Phoebus. " Come in." He invited, a casual smile on his face.

Phoebus noted the clicking in the door, and straightened even more than before when it opened. Still very stoic, and not even blinking an eye at the peculiar guards that passed through, Phoebus nodded when Lyle spoke. He walked inside and hovered a few feet in front of the door. Then he took another step and waited patiently. "You wished to see me, sir?" Phoebus said automatically, so used to military formalities that he didn't even have to think about it.

Lyle nodded, waiting until the door was closed to relax his shoulders. He walked over this bed and set Indian style. He had a bowl of apple slices beside him and a pink blanket under his bed, obviously for someone else as there was a pillow there as well. He took a bite of one of the slices, looking over Phoebus as he studied his words. " I don't like to dance around the conversation so I'll be straight forward." He spoke sternly now, narrowing his eyes to Phoebus. " Thee have been five murders within the city, all victims have been found with their blood drained." He slid off the bed and onto his feet, his movements actually graceful. He slid his feet over to the desk and spread some scrolls out. He then laid down some drawings, " Here are the reports. Detailed, and even a sketch of the bodies." He offered Phoebus a look. Lyle looked at his hand as if it were interesting. " I have many obvious reasons to suspect your former captain. She is the only vampire I've encountered near this city, and even at Eagle Point." He explained, then crossed his arms. " I know you may sympathize with her still, but let me be clear." He walked over to his closet and took out a white scarf with a black strip running down the middle, something like the scarf Chainey had given to all her elite. " I know her far better than any of the elite did....." he closed his eyes and looked away.

As much as he was frustrated with Lyle, Phoebus had to admit he appreciated the forwardness. He had always preferred his superiors getting to the point rather than slowly building up to it with unnecessary speeches. Phoebus, being well-trained, did not show any emotion when Lyle mentioned that there were five murders. On the inside, his heart nearly skipped a beat from surprise. That wasn't good. Chainey was making her killings too obvious. The last thing Phoebus wanted was for her to get caught. He neared slowly, cautiously, to look at the reports Lyle had laid out. It was true: the similarity between the deaths was the cause. They had all been drained of blood and were pale and gruesome. Phoebus brushed his hand over the papers when Lyle had walked to the closet. He took in the man's words, but he did not appreciate them. If Lyle was leading up to Phoebus turning Chainey in, then he had another thing coming. Lyle showed a scarf just like the one Phoebus had. Except where Phoebus's was light orange, Lyle's was white with a black stripe. Against his restraint, Phoebus's eyes popped slightly. Many questions swarmed inside him. Had the two been friends? Lovers? Family figures? Either way, whatever they shared was gone. Lyle had made that clear when he coldly cast Chainey off. Phoebus wanted to bombard his leader with questions, but all he could get out of his mouth was a simple, "Oh ... I see." His tone was very matter-of-fact and mechanical, but there was an underlying uneasiness.

Lyle looked toward the window, "There was a time when we were lovers, but that was before I knew the real her. Before she knew the real me too." He took a deep breath, realizing he was talking to a soldier. He grinned and laughed a bit, leaning his head back against the wall. "I go on about her because I want you to know something." He narrowed his eyes to Phoebus, " She is incapable of love. She would have betrayed the elite sooner or later, keep that in mind." He warned Phoebus, lifting up his shirt a bit to reveal an old wound. The claw marks were identical to that of Chainey's form. He walked over to Phoebus and put a hand on his shoulder, "I take care of my soldiers. However, I cannot always be there, so I need someone to help me out." He took his hand off and walked over to his bed, taking something out from underneath the pillow. "I can trust you to do whats right and protect the innocent, can't I?" He asked, walking over and holding out a pure silver knife to Phoebus, the blade sharp and the handle thin. "There is nothing she fears more than silver. If she attacks anyone, use it. Keep an eye on her as well, I want to know where she is. All I need is one piece of evidence besides her being, then she will be contained and the city safe once more. Can I trust you, Phoebus?" He asked, walking passed the man and keeping his back to him. Lyle knew well Phoebus was most likely not the kind of soldier to blindly follow orders, a man coming to a lost city to be a soldier is most likely seeking more than a job. He grinned a bit, excited that the man who was stealing Chainey away would be tied to his hands.

Phoebus did not appear to be immensely surprised that Lyle and Chainey had been lovers in the past. That could certainly explain the coldness between them. One of the most harsh and bitter things in the world was dissolved love. When it had been drained dry of its former fire. That is what Phoebus had come to notice anyway. It was why he had never loved. If he was already capable of such power and hate without it, then he certainly didn't want to add an inconvienence like that into the mix. He narrowed his eyes when Lyle said that Chainey wasn't capable of love. He could hardly believe that. Did Lyle deem her incapable just because of a form she couldn't control? Maybe you're just bitter, Phoebus thought, a dry smile in his mind. Lyle approached and put a hand on his shoulder. He did not flinch at the touch, but his eyes briefly flickered downward. "Of course, sir," Phoebus replied when Lyle walked away. Lyle brought the knife over, and Phoebus looked down at it. The silver glinted dangerously in the light. Swallowing, Phoebus took the knife and studied it. It was similar to a rapier in width. He turned the handle in his hands, feeling the surge of power that came with the weapon. "Contained ..." he repeated softly, muttering it more to himself than Lyle. This was it. This blade was all it would take to kill Chainey. And Lyle wanted him to use it on her if she ever got out of line. No emotion crossed his face. He looked up at Lyle like a moving statue. "I have one question, sir. Considering that I have not been in the elite as long as the others, it would seem that there are more qualified members than myself. Why choose me for such a matter?"

Lyle turned around and stared at Phoebus for a moment, his face voice of any emotion. Lyle had naturally given one to Kai as well, but he wouldn't really confess that, it might give the soldier in front of him some sort of clue. He smiled, "Why indeed," He answered simply, then walked to the door. "You're dismissed now soldier." He opened the door for him and gestured him out, frowning when the line across the door was crossed. He waited for Phoebus to leave, then shut the door slowly, turning back to his closet. "Your move, " He whispered to himself.

(( We could time skip? I was thinking Chainey would sneak into Phoebus's room while he was gone. ^^ ))

((Sure we can do that ^^))
Phoebus narrowed his eyes. So much for straightforward. The man had copped out and taken an ominous route, which too many people did nowadays, and Phoebus hated it. What made it worse was he had no authority to challenge Lyle on the matter. He nodded gruffly at Lyle and then left the room without another word. Words could not describe how happy he was about that being brief. Yet he was disturbed by what Lyle had asked him to do. The silver blade was still in Phoebus's hand, making metallic swishing sounds as his arms moved back and forth. He was tempted to discard it, but he didn't want Lyle to realize as of yet that he had no intention whatsoever of killing Chainey. There was the phrase "keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer" and Phoebus intended to do exactly that. He would keep a protective eye on Chainey, but also a cautious one on his leader. Phoebus decided he would quickly visit the stables to check up on his beloved horse and then return back to his room. He had a lot to think about.

The walls of the main house were high, the stone wall that surrounded it was no easy climb either. It was designed to keep unwanted guests from thieving from the treasury, or sneaking up on the leaders. Chainey was no human though and scaling the walls was something she found to be sporty, even fun. She stretched her claws out and found the crack in the wall, occasionally making her own as she climbed. She looked around, her ears flicking back and forth. She was hearing better since the days before when a rock had impaired her. She smelled around, taking in how far she had climbed, then she caught scent of the room she wanted, a few windows down. She let go of the wall and glided down to Phoebus's window. She poked her head in, knowing the main house didn't normally keep glass windows, they were more wide holes in the wall. "Pho?- You in here? Better speak now before I take something off." She warned, then put her ears back and grinned. She had no bath or shower at the inn, a peasants life was quite boring to her. She missed the showers of the main house, and guessing Phoebus was patrolling or something, she decided to use his room for her own gain.
She took off her tunic and loin clothe and folded them on the bed, then walked into the bathing area given to each separate room. She didn't take too long in the shower, simply washing her wings and tail, combing her mane with some special soap she had packed in her sidebag, and brushed her teeth. She then climbed out of the shower, drying off and putting her clothes back on. She yawned and plopped down on the bed, curling up and wrapping her tail around her form. She closed her eyes and laid much like a dog, putting her head on her arms. The room smelled of people she was found of, things that were familiar and smells she could trust. Her wings provided a nice blanket, but at times she just folded them back as she considered it to be too hot.

Achilles seemed more at ease tonight, which Phoebus was thankful for. Like with any animal, the horse had been a bit anxious with all the changes. Even if they were not told or could not understand human events, they still sensed if things had taken a turn for the good or the worse. Achilles was especially close enough to Phoebus to know that his master was more tense. Phoebus gave the horse a few red apples he had bought, Achilles' favourite snack next to sugar cubes, and then returned to the main house. The halls seemed darker, less welcoming and friendly. Perhaps it was because he was still not used to there being no Chainey, Temperance, or elite members gracing its floor. He rubbed the back of his neck, stretching a bit and then entered his room. The sight of Chainey in her gargoyle form curled up on his bed nearly gave him a heart attack. That was the last thing in the world he was expecting. A gasp escaped him, and he quickly covered his mouth.
Shutting the door behind him, he put the silver knife on the farthest edge of the desk with the blade pointed away from her and then took two angry steps forward. "What are you doing?" he demanded in a hushed whisper. His teeth were gritted tightly. "You shouldn't be here, Chainey! Do you want to get yourself killed? That man, that Lyle man, is looking for you! Worst of all, he wants me in charge of it. And now you're right here in his building. You must go, I don't want you to get caught." He pointed to the window, jutting his finger forward with each word for emphasis.

Chainey gave a small and high pitched yawn, stretching her hands out as she ignored most of what Phoebus was talking about. She set upright and rubbed her eyes, her tail flicking back and forth. "So you're my enemy now?" She questioned in a sleepy tone, putting her ears back and giving a dull expression to the soldier. "Ooo, forbidden friendship- I like it." She teased, stretching again and sliding off his bed. She walked passed him, over to his closet. "I wanted to take a shower and your window was open." She gestured toward the window, then smiled a bit at her own joke.
Lyle's name never left her head. The past was always there, but it didn't bother her much. "This building was mine before it was his. Besides, I can take care of myself." She turned and put her hand on the desk. Her ears perked up for a moment and her nostrils flared, she smelled something she never really thought she would smell again. "No." She whispered, but retracted her hand to her chest. Her heartbeat quickened and her tail rose to inspect the scent, much like a child wanting to know what was on the stove. The tail merely touched part of the silver knife with it's tip, then it swung back behind her. She yelped and jumped back, running toward the window. She hissed at him and arched her wings, grabbing her tail and starting to lick the tip. The tail itself looked burnt where it had touched the silver and the scales started to change color, from their normal gray to a sick dark red. "You seriously want to kill me?!" She questioned between licks. "Are you insane..." Her voice was hushed now as she worked on her tail. She licked the wound frequently, but the wound seemed to only grow. Her tone was a bit bitter now, mixed with confusion and some sorrow buried, but mostly bitter anger. She knew the silver was there, but was still unsure why her tail would touch such danger. She guessed it was the doubt she had that the soldier would carry such a rare weapon.

"Chainey ..." Phoebus pressed his hand to his forehead, resisting the urge to sigh loudly in frustration. "I don't ... I can't ..." His hand slid down his face, dragging his skin with it. His eyes suddenly looked sullen and tired. "You ... risked your life for a shower?" For a while he just stood there in disbelief, unable to comprehend how Chainey was treating her life so carelessly. He did like her company, and he did appreciate the odd relationship they seemed to have, but it was still no excuse. He did not want to see her hurt, and if that meant not seeing her at all, that would be a sacrifice he had to make.
His stomach tightened into a firm knot when he saw Chainey's tail slither like an air snake towards the silver knife. Before there was any time to react, her tail touched the weapon and then retracted as quickly as if it had touched boiling water. It even took on a colour like it had been scorched. Phoebus grimaced when she backed away and looked like a cornered animal. Her words made him sigh. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "That is what Lyle wants," Phoebus said. "He said he wants to know where you are and he wants evidence that could have you contained. He wants me to keep an eye on you, and should you ever become too dangerous, use it." Phoebus picked up the knife and a bright beam of light bounced off the blade. He narrowed his eyes and then put it back down. "I don't want to hurt you," he said firmly. "Let alone kill you. The only reason I have this is so that Lyle thinks I'm taking his order seriously. If he notices that I've gotten rid of the knife then it will become blatantly obvious that I'm protecting you." He went to his closet, pulled out a thick white cloth and then began to wrap the knife tightly in the material until it was fully covered. "That is exactly why you cannot come here again. It is far too risky, Chainey. I know you can take care of yourself, but Lyle seems oddly ... determined. It's not safe for you here."

Chainey licked the wound a bit more, then she bit into her tail. There was a bit of blood, but she sucked at it continually. She spit the blood out the window, her tail flinching from the pain. After a moment, she dropped her tail and narrowed her eyes to Phoebus. "You seriously think Lyle doesn't know you're protecting me?" She questioned, climbing out of the window and putting her ears back. "Lyle can read your mind, I don't know how, but he can. It's like he knows everything about you. He explained that unlike most humans he can use most of his brain, but I'm not sure if he was bluffing or not." She confessed.
She put her ears forward at his words and pulled her wings back. "What, you don't think I can take on the child of the desert? Ha!" She put her ears back and grinned. "Ha! Ha! Ha!" She laughed dryly and loudly, purposely so she would be noticed. She then ran to his door and swung it open, stumbling into the hall and waving her arms back and forth. She stopped after a moment and looked around, luckily it was rare for guards to patrol down this hall. "See, nobody cares." She teased, then gave him a serious expression, placing a hand on her hip. "I'm more than willing to die. I'm only alive to humor you. You think for some reason that a beast like me could live within this God-forsaken land and this hell bound city." She walked back into his room and rolled her eyes. "I am the only creature like me. I'm going to do whatever I want because I've nothing to lose. That and I'm quite sure Lyle would only capture me to mount on his wall. I think that fate is well, hanging on the wall above some nobal man's chair." She set on his bed and leaned her head back, a grin still on her face.
